Le jour le plus important pour un Américain ? Thanksgiving of course! Mais Maéva ne sait pas vraiment de quoi il s’agit...

C’est quoi la fête de Thanksgiving ?

Aux Etats-Unis, c’est un jour férié depuis 1941 et une fête annuelle incontournable le 4^e jeudi de novembre, accompagnée d’un repas familial autour d’une dinde !

Buddy nous en dit un peu plus sur son origine.

- Maéva : À ton avis, Buddy, c’est quoi le jour de l’année le plus important pour un Américain ? Noël ?

- Buddy : Christmas Day? Hmm...

- Maéva : Le jour de l’an ?

- Buddy : New Year’s Day? Pas bête...

- Maéva : Ou le jour de la fête nationale, le 4 juillet ?

- Buddy : Independence Day? Possible, oui...

- Maéva : Ca c’est super, ça me donne pas une réponse...

- Buddy : Hmm, je dirais… Thanksgiving.

- Maéva : Ah oui, tiens, j’y avais même pas pensé. Peut-être parce que je sais pas exactement ce que c’est… Père Buddy, raconte-moi une histoire !

- Buddy : Oh oh oh !

- Maéva : Non, ça c’était le père Noël.

- Buddy : Ah pardon. Well, my little Maéva, let me tell you the story of Thanksgiving. In the 17th century, a few British travelled from England to America on a boat called the Mayflower. They arrived in Massachusetts and started to build a city. But a very cold winter killed half of the colonists, and the survivors were starving.

- Maéva : Starving?

- Buddy : Starving. They were extremely hungry because they had nothing to eat.

- Maéva : Ah oui, les pauvres

.- Buddy : So Native Americans, who already lived there, taught the colonists how to catch fish and grow corn. Later, the colonists invited the Native Americans to a big meal :  that was the first American Thanksgiving.

- Maéva : And that’s what American people celebrate every fourth Thursday of November, I get it!

- Buddy : Exactly! Every family gets together and has a delicious meal. Turkey, potatoes, corn, green beans and pumpkin pie.

- Maéva : Une tarte à la citrouille ?? Mais pourquoi ?

- Buddy : Because these are dishes that are indigenous to the Americas : the food that colonists had for their first Thanksgiving.

- Maéva : Ok. So that’s all? Just a big meal?

- Buddy: Oh no, there are other traditions for Thanksgiving : charity for example. Poor people are provided with food.

- Maéva : That’s nice.

- Buddy : Families watch American football matches on TV, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

- Maéva : What’s that?

- Buddy : A big parade with large balloons of cartoon characters, high school marching bands, musical performances, TV personalities and so on.

- Maéva : Wow, I guess it’s a cool day. Pourquoi on a pas ça, nous, en France, c’est nul.

- Buddy : Eh bien nous on a la fête des rois. La galette aux Etats-Unis, ils connaissent pas.

- Maéva : Ah ouais… Ok, je leur laisse la dinde et les petits pois, je prends la frangipane et la couronne !

• To starve : mourir de faim
