Rap US - Culture et connaissance en anglais

Avec Buddy, Maéva apprend tout du rap américain. Né dans le Bronx, à New York, au début des années 1970, il vient du hip-hop. Dans le rap, c'est la rime qui donne le rythme.

L'origine du rap 

- Buddy : Tu sais, Maéva, le rap que tu aimes tant, c’est… Maéva ?

- Maéva : Tu me parles ?

- Buddy : Tout à fait, je te faisais remarquer que le rap est né là où tu vas dans… une semaine !

- Maéva : À New-York, sérieux ?

- Buddy : Yes ma’am!

- Maéva : Ben raconte !

- Buddy : It all started fifty years ago, during the seventies, in a district of New York called “The Bronx”. When young people wanted to have fun, they organized block parties.

- Maéva : What’s a block party?

- Buddy : You know American cities are often divided into blocks. And you know what a party is.

- Maéva : Oui, une fête.

- Buddy : So now you know what a block party is.

- Maéva : Une fête de quartier, en gros.

- Buddy : That’s it! So there were DJs, Disc-Jockeys, playing funk and soul music. And of course everyone danced.

- Maéva : You know what I prefer about dancing? When there are only drums.

- Buddy : Yeah, it is called a « percussive break ». Let’s do it!

- Maéva : Eh! That’s too short!

- Buddy : That’s exactly what people thought! Percussive breaks were too short, there was not enough time to dance! So one day, a DJ decided to extend this percussive break by playing on two IDENTICAL discs.

- Maéva : Two identical discs? Why?

- Buddy : That’s a very clever idea! You can start the break on one disc, then when it ends, you swap to the other disc, you play the break again, and while you’re playing the second disc, you can rewind the first one then when the second break stops you can play the first disc again and so on!

- Maéva : Eh, that’s an infinite loop! People can dance forever!

- Buddy : Exactly! And on this infinite loop, the MC, the Master of Ceremony can speak in a rhythmic and rhyming manner which is the beginning of... rapping.

- Maéva : That’s so cool! Maybe I could be a rapper. MC Maeva… hein?

- Buddy : Pfff, tu peux pas test…. MC Buddy, le seul rappeur qui peut rapper ET faire la musique en même temps.

- Maéva : C’est un peu triché, mais j’avoue ça claque..
